We scurried back to our room. The night clerk paid us no attention, barely glancing up from his crossword puzzle, despite our disheveled appearances.

“Probably used to seeing ghosts this time of night.” I said. I waved to the clerk as we veered towards the ancient elevator.

“Every time I step foot in this thing I feel like I’m stepping into a time machine.”

“Trust me,” I said. “Not the same thing at all.”

Karen looked at me oddly. I was used to it.

We packed and left in a hurry. In under half an hour, we’d dressed, refilled our suitcases, checked out of The Stanley, and hauled ourselves and our belongings out to our pickup truck. Well, Samuel Hitchcock’s pickup truck—on extended loan to us. How one of those plush Stanley Hotel bath towels ended up in my suitcase, I’ll never know. But I figured if the hotel minded, they’d be billing Karen for it.

In the far corner of the dark parking lot, Lena Jay sat in the open side door of the RV, a big fat frown on her face. Ernie was struggling with the four flat tires by the glow from inside the RV. What he thought he was going to do about them I couldn’t imagine. We smiled and waved as we passed.

“Adios.” Karen shot them a one-finger salute.

“Damn.” The pickup’s tires squealed as I swerved past the exit and hit the side street.

“What?”

“I should’ve helped myself to some chocolate bars for the trip while I had the chance.”

“I’ll buy you some,” promised Karen.

Traffic was light. The sky was dark. I turned on the headlamps and Karen gave me directions. When she wasn’t shouting at me to take this turn or that, her nose was buried in a paperback novel. The Shining, to be precise. She’d picked a copy up in the hotel gift shop.

“I thought you hated horror?” I said.

“Shh! Trying to read here!” Karen snapped. She stuck her finger between two pages for a bookmark. “Besides, I don’t hate reading horror. I hate living it.”

“Difference noted.” I lit a cigarette, took a puff, and drove on. They were Winstons but who was I to quibble with a free cigarette? Plus, Karen had long ago stopped nagging me about my smoking. I’d only had to compromise and keep my window cracked open a few inches. Noisy and wasn’t doing my hair any good, but worth every bit of the inconvenience and discomfort.

As the minutes passed, the day grew brighter. My thoughts, on the other hand, grew darker. I had no idea what I was doing. What if I was wrong? What if Dr. Allison wasn’t helping us but rather sending us off on a wild goose, rather Ken Dalton, chase?

And what did Emily Crenshaw’s death have to do with Ken Dalton’s disappearance? Had he murdered her believing that she was an alien, perhaps? The scientist could be delusional. Did he kill Crenshaw in self defense? I hoped not, if only for Karen’s sake. She’s be crushed by that. But her brother had been under tremendous strain, according to Marcia Allison.
